I have known Panos Evagorou for a very long time. What struck me about him initially was his monotone voice and seemingly impassive facial expressions. He projected an aura of serenity and stoicism, but as I got to know him better, I discovered a more sinister personality beneath the surface.
Panos exhibited eccentricity and seemed to struggle with expressing emotions. To compensate for this, he would often act in ways that he believed would make him appear more loyal and normal within his social circles. Unfortunately, some of these actions could be considered unethical, such as verbally or physically targeting individuals who were unable to defend themselves, as long as there were no repercussions for him.
I experienced both verbal and physical altercations with Panos without any apparent provocation. What was striking about these encounters was his ability to remain emotionally detached, presenting himself as an impartial observer. This detachment led me to believe that he could commit a serious act and continue with his day without any emotional reaction.
When reflecting on Panos' personality, the person that comes to mind is Nicos Metaxas,a cypriot serial killer, with whom he seems to share several emotional characteristics. For example, both exhibit callous behavior and were perceived as mild and obedient by their peers.
Panos' behavior often appeared robotic, as if he was mimicking the actions of those around him. Over time, his mannerisms became more human-like, but the mechanical aspect of his personality would still surface occasionally. Some of his actions were even considered borderline criminal, which earned him various nicknames.
In an attempt to portray himself as an intellectual, Panos would often downplay his academic efforts, implying that he didn't study much. However, he would be quick to offer unsolicited explanations for other people's high grades if they surpassed his own. He would usually attribute their success to studying more than him, even though he had no knowledge of their study habits.
Panos' mother once mentioned that she had placed him on a strict study program during elementary school. Despite attending several language courses and receiving private lessons in his native Greek, Panos never seemed to become proficient in any language. However, his mother was more successful in nurturing his mathematical and scientific abilities. With her support and guidance from various private tutors, Panos managed to stay ahead of most of his classmates throughout his school years, although he didn't seem exceptionally gifted when faced with novel problems.
In conversations with Panos, I found that he didn't feel guilty about his past bullying behavior and would not hesitate to repeat it. This lack of conscience allowed him to maintain a clear conscience in spite of his actions.
